ABOUT ME

Who Am I?

I have been studying and practising yoga for over 10 years.
My journey into health, fitness and wellness started at the age of 5 when I began training as a gymnast. An active life style and developing skills such as co-ordination, flexibility, balance, strength and discipline from a young age carried into late teenage years where I took on responsibility of coaching a small group of young children, passing on my skills and love of gymnastics. The influence of gymnastics extended beyond the gym and into my lifestyle.
While completing my Masters in Business Administration at university, I joined a Jazz Dance group. I could easily connect to the physical and mental skills I acquired as a child and discovered my passion for the creative and artistic expression through movement with music

My Yoga Journey

Starting a career in the Financial Services industry meant long hours in the office, stuck behind a desk. Human beings are designed to move. Yoga found me in 2009 by chance during a lunchtime session in the office. I re-connected with my love and passion for movement and joined Ashtanga and Vinyasa classes.

Having a family and trying to maintain a work-life-balance took its toll on my health in 2016. The rather sedentary lifestyle – a number of us experience in their jobs with not enough exercise – inevitably led to physical and mental problems. Information-overload, over-stimulating technology and unrealistic expectations to juggle life in today’s fast-paced society left me feeling physically and mentally drained. While taking six months off work due to stress-related ill health, I fully immersed myself in yoga and re-built my health. This time, I connected to a deeper, more holistic yoga practice that equally balanced body and mind. My yoga practice became gentler and more nurturing. I was able to connect to my true self which fundamentally changed my outlook on life and meant re-evaluating my priorities.

Having experienced the life-changing benefits of a regular yoga and mindfulness practice I wanted to learn more about the art and science that yoga is, including its underlying philosophy. I attended several yoga workshops on stress- and energy management, anxiety and depression and discovered the healing power of Yoga Nidra. Realising that children (including my own) are growing up in a world with many distractions, temptations, over-stimulation and peer-pressure I decided to take up Special’s Yoga’s ‘Teaching Yoga and Mindfulness to Children’ teacher training. Shortly after I enrolled with Yoga Campus to become a yoga teacher. I am dedicated to deepen my knowledge with Doug Keller (‘Therapeutic Wisdom of Yoga’) and Charlotta Martinus (‘Teaching Yoga and Mindfulness to Young People, aged 11-18’) and intend to continue studying Yoga Therapy – an application of yoga practices to alleviate physical and mental health conditions.

My teaching style is focussed on healthy alignment and intelligent sequencing with an appreciation for flowing artful movement. I envision making my classes accessible to every-body by providing modifications and variations in the context of centring postures around breath awareness. I aim to teach with compassion and humour by inspiring my students to discover their own unique, potential to lead a healthier life.
